The weekly outpatient therapeutic feeding programme for children with severe malnutrition is underway at Boricha District's Yirba Health Center in southern Ethiopia.

Mothers from surrounding drought-affected villages have brought their children to be weighed and measured, after which they will receive their weekly ration of the ready-to-use therapeutic food Plumpy'nut.

Eleven-month-old Mare has come to Yirba with his mother Ikashe. This is only his second visit, but the treatment is already having a dramatic impact. His weight has increased from 5.7 to 6 kilogrammes after a seven-day course of Plumpy'nut®.

SB (Ethiopian) UNICEF Nutrition Project Officer Mesfin Tekele:
"The boy's appetite has improved. He is now eating well. The data shows that his situation is improving."

In 2008 ECHO provided 3.3 million euros towards UNICEF's emergency nutrition response in Ethiopia. The funds helped purchase 697 tons of Plumpy'nut. The energy-rich paste contains the right balance of proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to treat severe malnutrition.

In response to alarming rates of severe malnutrition among children in drought affected districts in 2008, UNICEF supported the training of health extension workers to treat severe acute malnutrition.

Gennet Carlos, a health extension worker in Ikashe's village fills a plastic bag with Plumpy nut.

These health extension workers are bringing the treatment for severe malnutrition to the village level, thereby saving countless additional lives.
