UNICEF Representative, Zimbabwe (English)
"Just getting everybody to wash their hands with soap, particularly before eating and particularly after using the toilet can decrease by about forty per cent all of diarrhea in Zimbabwe. It's probably the most powerful thing we have in all of the health circles to decrease deaths among children under the age of five."

SOT Dr. Custodia Manadlate
World Health Organisation Representative, Zimbabwe
"Washing hands can be done in the market where we are, can be done in our schools. Can be done also in hospitals, can be done also in our own homes. If we at home we don't teach our children, our selves practice washing of hands we are not doing justice to prevention of many diseases."

This makes the market a predictable place for diseases to spread but also a suitable stage to communicate the hand washing message.

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Patricia Chibunga, Vendor: "Hand washing is good. As a vendor I want to encourage my clients to wash hands. It only becomes a challenge in the absence of water and hand washing facilities in the market."

To effectively influence people's hygiene practices, especially when water and sanitation access is poor, it is important to stress the advantages and health benefits of hand washing regularly.

SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Salama, UNICEF Representative Zimbabwe: "Just getting everyone to wash their hands with soap. Particularly before eating, and particularly after using the toilet can decrease by that 40% all of diarrhoea in Zimbabwe. It's probably the most powerful thing we have in all the of the health circle to decrease deaths amongst children under the age of five."

To encourage communities, families, and children to wash their hands with soap, demonstrations took place in many key sites such as markets, outside of public toilets, schools and restaurants. But the success of the campaign relies on each and every household to implement better hygiene practices.
