In a surprise visit to meet victims of Haiti's cholera epidemic, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake stressed that even as misfortune continues, Haitians are not alone.

"Well I came here for a number of purposes. One was to try to express the support of UNICEF and the UN community and the international community to the people of Haiti who are fighting against cholera and all they suffered through earthquake and difficult political season."

At a UNICEF supported cholera centre Mr Lake reassured Haitians who think it's unsafe to visit their friends and relatives.

"So I wanted to come here and meet with some of the patients and shake hands and show that it's perfectly safe and to remind people that the people that I just met in this tent are just regular people who happen to have cholera."

Cholera has claimed more than 2,300 lives. Mr Lake met religious leaders and announced a new partnership to fight the epidemic.

And he had a message for the country's political leaders in the wake of the election related unrest that has hampered efforts to contain the cholera epidemic.

"I hope very much that politics is not allowed to interfere, at a very difficult time, to interfere with the fight against cholera."

UNICEF has launched a large scale supply operation and is backing that up with a mass media campaign to change habits that places people at risk of choleras. The epidemic remains an enormous challenge that requires a sustained commitment.
