Scenes of desolation and starvation… almost impossible to witness.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow recently visited North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to see first-hand the devastation left by the recent fighting, leading to an estimated 300,000 displaced people… just in the last three months.

For children, schools in the area are unsafe, even a therapeutic feeding center was recently looted…

SOUNDBITE, MIA FARROW:
“How can a hundred armed men come and chase sick…severely, severely malnourished children into the forest.”

She also met with concerned parents of children in a village now under rebel control….and she went to a camp for internally displaced people to witness UNICEF relief efforts underway.

SOUNDBITE, MIA FARROW:
“Behind you there’s approximately 5,000 displaced people that have come here in the last month, // and here we are actually at the peacekeeping headquarters of MONUC, and though peacekeepers are overwhelmed, and by all accounts not able to protect everybody, still the minimal protection they can provide is enough to bring thousands of people here seeking safety, “and what I just saw is kids literally starving to death, a little boy, there’s white foam coming out of his mouth, had a high fever and is just reduced to bones.”

SOUNDBITE, MIA FARROW (English):
“I’m really happy that I’m with UNICEF because I’m not actually one person, I’m with UNICEF, and the staff here are really working night and day trying to address the emergency situation. But also just as a human being, what is my human responsibility even beyond UNICEF? Where do I go with this? What will I write? Who will I talk to? What is my moral mandate?”

… difficult questions, in the midst of a difficult situation.
