As part of her routine as a Head Prefect, 17-year-old Dashenee walks the school grounds to ensure that her friends are following school rules. At the same time, Dashenee is also looking out for signs of bullying among students.

In 2007, Dashenee attended a series of school activities sponsored by the UNICEF safe schools program, in partnership with Malaysia's Ministry of Education and HELP University College. Through the seminars and workshops, Dashenee and the other students were empowered to cope with different forms of physical and psychological bullying and prevent it from going too far.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dashenee Huthamaputhiran, 17 year old:
"The most important thing that I learned from the bullying class is the types of bully[ing] that students do to another student. For example, like, I never knew that calling people names is known as bully[ing] until I went through that program in class."

Today, technology has provided new opportunities for bullying, as more young people depend on mobile phones and the Internet for communication and entertainment.

With more knowledge about bullying, Dashenee has been able to help a 14-year old girl at school who is a victim of cyber bullying through a popular social networking site. Using her peer-to-peer coaching skills, Dashenee intervened and encouraged the girl to seek help from the school counselor.

SOUNDBITE (English) Youssouf Oomar, UNICEF Representative Malaysia:
"A safe learning place is every child's right. In fact, one of the ways of making this learning place a safe environment is to address the issue of bullying, and we've come up with a series of manuals, we want to engage in some training activities, because we want to make sure that the child, but also the teachers, are properly equipped to address bullying in the learning place."

Guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF works to ensure that every child like Dashenee can live free of fear and violence.
