After half a year, I think we have to say what did not happen. What did not happen? We had no major outbreak. No major diseases all around, epidemic. And this is something that we have to say. Why? Because we have been quite good in delivering water, in supporting sanitation, providing food – our colleagues from the World Food Program. And so on and so forth. I think this is important to mention. We said at the beginning that we wanted to stabilize things.

But we focus on the poor and we have also to make sure that we work with the young people from the middle class.

This is also the elite of tomorrow. They will be leading this country.

The majority of the population is under 18. Forty-three percent of the population. They do not vote! But they are there. So a Haiti fit for children is making sure that every single partner – from the government, etc – are really convinced that they have to put children at the top priority in their agenda.

I see many meetings that when we have UNICEF around the table, people think about children. And when we are not there, they tend to forget. The adults are like that. So a Haiti fit for children. If you think, you realize immediately what it is. But what we have to do, making sure that people do not forget… and put them, really, on the agenda.

Make sure that you don't forget Haiti. Haiti has to be in the press and all around, all the time. And secondly, we have also to mention the good things. Many good things are happening here. And we tend to forget that. We focus on the things that do not work. So these are two key messages for me. And if you show the good things – things that are working – then we say, hey, there is something interesting in Haiti.. and maybe Haiti can be used for other countries, showing good examples.

Education is key. We have to have all children at school… and we have to have quality of education. It will be really complicated. It's a long process and we have to be all together, partnering not competing. If you don't have jobs, I mean, the families will never be able to support their children. They will never be able to really change their habits – if they are very poor, to abandon the children in an institution, in another family. They will not be able to do that. So we have to have jobs.

I believe that Haiti can show examples to the world… in child protection, it is possible. In education, it is possible. I dream about that. You know, at one point being able to send colleagues, together with partners of this government, in another country, showing what they did. And what worked. To give an example to other countries. This is one of my dreams. And I think we will get to that.
