For the first time since a massive earthquake levelled huge areas of Kashmir, some children are back in school. It’s only a tent, but it’s the first learning place to be re-established in a city 90 per cent was destroyed by the earth quake more than two weeks ago.
Opened by UNICEF, it serves the community of several dozen displaced families. This is the beginning of ta rebuilding of an educational system from scratch. The massive blow flattened most of the schools, killed thousands of pupils, and hundreds of teachers.
The few schools that are still standing have been declared dangerous and unusable. This tent school is the first of 10 for the 19 tent enclaves that are sprung up in the city of Muzaffarabad.
Parents struggling to reclaim what they can say having their children in class and knowing they are safe gives them time to focus on survival and rebuilding.
For these children, it means a chance to learn and play. It’s also important that a routine is established in a world where they have seen terrible tragedy. UNICEF is turning to college graduates to lead classes. Training and basic supplies are provided.
In coming days school kits, developed for just this kind of emergency will arrive in a country. each with enough supplies to give essentials to 80 children. Taking possessions of their own exercise books, when they have lost nearly everything, means a lot. Each book and every lesson comes with a hope of a future.
