코트이부아르의 '다시학교로' 캠페인

2006.11.15
A statue depicting the hope offered by education stands vandalized in front of the burnt and looted ruin of what used to be one of Côte d’Ivoire’s top schools. Scorched books lay scattered in smashed classrooms…Testimony to three years of civil and ethnic conflict that has divided this country and thrown its schooling system into chaos. Since the crisis erupted in 2002, more than half of all school-going children, over 700,000 in all, have been forced to abandon their studies. YOUSSOUF OOMAR – UNICEF REPRESENTATIVE “I think that for me, it’s a tragedy. We have to get all the children to school. We have to get all children back to where they belong – on the school bench!” NAT SOUND BREAK: School Bell And for those children still in school, conditions are very difficult – especially in the northern half of the country no longer under the control of the government. Students here struggle to learn amid half empty classrooms, broken desks and almost no teaching supplies. Thousands of teachers fled the region with other government workers. As a result many parents have chosen to keep their children at home. A situation that is unbearable for principal Assita Traore. ASSITA TRAORE – HEADMISTRESS DAR ES SALAAM SCHOOL BUOAKE “I’m sick, I’m sick. I want school to function. School has nothing to do with war. I want school to work and for people to send their children to school.” Further complicating the situation – national exams have not been held here for more than two years, trapping more than 60,000 children in a state of educational limbo. NAT SOUND BREAK: Construction UNICEF is helping get Côte d’Ivoire’s educational system back on track by re-habilitating 200 damaged schools and supporting the training of 4,500 teachers countrywide. Together with its partners, UNICEF has also launched a massive back to school campaign and is distributing over half a million school kits. While there has been encouraging progress with Côte d’Ivoire’s United Nations sponsored peace process in recent weeks, educational stability can only be guaranteed once a lasting peace is achieved. Until then many Ivorian children continue to be denied their fundamental right. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Getting Children Back to School in Cote d묲voire Asset Duration: 02 min 31 secs Shoot City: N/A Shoot Country: Ivory Coast Shoot Date: Nov 30 2005
