The New Year brought heavy snow to Pakistan. As had been feared - many villages were cut off. It is three months since the earthquake struck, killing over 75,000 people and leaving millions homeless and dependent on aid. Many people – among them children - do not have adequate clothing for the freezing temperatures. In the race to beat the weather, UNICEF is rushing out winter supplies of clothing and blankets – the priority is to reach high villages. Soundbite, English, Munir Safieldin, who is in charge of UNICEF’s operations in the city of Muzaffarabad: “There are still so many villages high in the mountains, these still remain to be reached, so far we have been flying supplies in to these areas but we are talking about thousands of villages. This is not a small operation. We still need to keep pushing to reach the remaining villages on the tops of the hills.” The first helicopter to land after the storm is a reason to celebrate in the village of Macchiara. Roads are blocked and it’s a 2 day walk to the nearest town. The UN helicopter delivers a vital cargo of winter clothing kits. These blue bags, especially packed for UNICEF, contain essential items such as jackets and boots. Jalaila is 12 years old and has lived in Macchaira all her life. She is used to the hardships of winter, but this year is different. Soundbite, Urdu, Jalaila, 12, villager of Macchiara: “We used to live well before the earthquake, but it’s become very difficult to live here. It’s very cold in the tent and it’s difficult to manage.” It’s a careful operation to make sure that no-one misses out on aid. Even in this small community people live across a vast area – from deep valleys to high mountain tops. First The aim is to target every family and prioritize those living at high altitudes. As well as the winter clothing for their children, there are heavy quilts for each family - donations in kind from manufacturers. As long as the skies stay clear UNICEF will keep flying supplies in every day to villages like these. The fear is, there could be bad weather for several months to come. *** 37184-UNCF_3760_31461-n.MPG Asset Name : UNICEF: Providing Pakistan’s quake-affected children with winter supplies Asset Duration: 02 min 24 secs Shoot City: Macchiara village Shoot Country: Pakistan Shoot Date: Jan 5 2006
