10년 이래 최악의 에티오피아 가뭄

2006.11.16
A quest for water…. Empty water jerrycans strapped on their side, these women in Southern Ethiopia have walked long distances to get here. They’ve walked up to a full day through arid fields littered with the skeletons and decaying remains of fallen animals. Two successive years of failed rains have precipitated a severe drought---the worst in a decade. It has become a major humanitarian crisis, building up along Ethiopia’s remote south-eastern border with Kenya and Somalia. Families who have not already lost their animals to dehydration are fleeing the area hoping to save what remains of their herds. Deema Rashid chops firewood on the side of the main highway. She will try to sell it as coal to local markets. The money will be barely enough for her to buy food to feed her family SOT: (Afaanoromoo) Deema Rashid, mother “There is no food. Nothing to drink. No animals – the cattle are dying. Since there is nothing in the house we spend most of our time looking for wood. We have lots of problems. We have no money.” UNICEF has launched a $15 million dollar relief appeal to help people affected by the drought. SOT: Dan Toole (English), UNICEF Director of the Office of Emergency Programmes “Today we have the worst crisis in the Horn of Africa in decades. There are about 2 million Ethiopians at risk of famine. And the situation is getting near desperate, and will get much worse as the months go on, and the dry season starts.” Women and children are already bearing the brunt of the growing emergency. 56,000 children are currently vulnerable to moderate and severe malnutrition across the affected areas. With the relief funds, UNICEF will attend to families’ immediate survival needs while also keeping in mind the long term well-being of their children. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Ethiopia drought crisis is worst in a decade Asset Duration: 02 min 06 secs Shoot City: Oromia Region Shoot Country: Ethiopia Shoot Date: Jan 21 2006
