콩고민주공화국 동부 지역의 위기

2006.11.16
A young mother’s wailing pierces the camp. Forced to flee recent rebel fighting; now they must bury her young baby far from home. The small grave is dug, the funeral is swift, the young mother’s pain unbearable. The second baby buried this day. Death comes quickly to those displaced. Diarhoea, malaria and malnutrition are the causes. Six people died here on this day (Thursday, January 26). Ninety have died in the past two months. Some 20,000 fled here in terror from Mayi Mayi attacks in their far flung villages in Katanga DR Congo. For many it was a week’s walk from their homes to safety. UNICEF and Medecins sans Frontieres assisted the displaced with their basic needs and NGOs have distributed some food aid from the Congolese government, but it’s running out. This great grandmother of 86 was carried on the back of her son’s bicycle. Now her only thought is food: Soundbite, Great grandmother Ilunga Kapinga, 86: “What we get here to eat is not enough. It’s not what I am used to. That’s why I have such pains in my stomach all the time.” Her son, a tailor, has taken up his old trade again, doing what he can to feed the many mouths in his extended family. But he’s not making it. The very youngest are visibly malnourished. Maize supplies have run out for most and babies are being fed watered down manioc. But life goes on. As the country heads towards democratic elections, there are concerns that the displaced may be forced to return home too soon. For now they wait and hope for the much needed food aid to arrive. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Humanitarian Crisis Worsens in Eastern DR Congo Asset Duration: 02 min 09 secs Shoot City: Various Shoot Country: Congo Shoot Date: Jan. 26, 200
