WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF의 수장들, 아프리카 대호수 지역국가를 방문

2006.11.16
With millions of lives at stake in an area of the world often ignored, the heads of three United Nations humanitarian agencies are focusing attention on the Great Lakes region of Africa. The leaders of UNICEF, The World Food Program and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees have just finished a six-day trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda. They talked strategy with the presidents of each country and shared their thoughts with the local media. SOUNDBITE (English), Jim Morris, Executive Director, WFP: "Our visit to the Congo, and we'll go on to Rwanda and Burundi, is unusual in that three agency heads would travel together. But we do so, to make the symbolic statement that the U.N. works as a single team and a single family and that addressing humanitarian issues requires that we work as a single unit." They saw both hope and despair almost daily. On Tuesday, they welcomed 400 Congolese refugees returning home from Tanzania at Baraka port in eastern DRC. SOUNDBITE (English), Ann M. Veneman, Executive Director, UNICEF: "What was happening a year ago, and (compare it to) today, with refugees returning, children in school, you can see people rebuilding their homes, that there is progress being made." Other stops included a tour of Rwanda's Genocide Memorial. In DRC, they spoke with mothers and children benefitting from a feeding station. SOUNDBITE (English), Antonio Guterres, High Commissioner, UNHCR: "All these countries are interlinked - all the problems are interlinked and only a regional approach can be effective in tackling them." All the countries share a common trait - a desperate need for help in overcoming challenges like hunger, sexual abuse and being forced from your home. In Bujumbura, Burundi this is Thomas Nybo reporting for UNICEF Television.
