Amongst the most vulnerable of the thousands injured in last October’s earthquake are those who suffered severe spinal injuries. In a society where disability is not easily addressed, UNICEF is providing support by helping Pakistan’s National Institute of the Handicapped, to establish special ward. The center offers specialized equipment, therapy and rehabilitation. The ward can accommodate up to one hundred patients, all women and children. This woman has been paralysed from the waist down since a building collapsed on her during the earthquake. Soundbite Parveen “Thank God now things are better, thank God we were given help here. Had we been taken somewhere else we might have died from bedsores. “ Parveen’s unborn baby survived the whole ordeal and she is due to give birth in a month. But doctors say she will never walk again. Opposite her in the ward this disabled woman has already had her baby. But there are mixed emotions. All of these women are from poor villages where there would usually no infrastructure in the community to help them cope with their disability. Soundbite Dr Imran, UNICEF ”They are getting all the treatment, food, medicine, everything. And now we are also working along with the WHO with the ministry of health. Our future plans are that when these patients will go back to their communities, that we should have a community-based rehabilitation system, which has never existed before.” Another UNICEF priority is to equip schools so they can cater for the needs of disabled children. The young are especially in need of this long-term care. Sadaf is thirteen and paralysed since her school fell on her, breaking her spine. But with help she may be able to walk again. Continued therapy gives hope to her and other young girls. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Helping disabled Pakistan earthquake survivors Asset Duration: 01 min 50 secs Shoot City: Islamabad Shoot Country: Pakistan Shoot Date: Mar 16 2006
