NBA, 유니세프의 에이즈 퇴치 캠페인에 동참하다

2006.11.16
America’s National Basketball Association – the NBA – and UNICEF have joined forces at UNICEF headquarters today in a drive to the basket: support the global AIDS campaign UNITE FOR CHILDREN UNITE AGAINST AIDS. The press conference brought together UNICEF Executive Director Ann M Veneman, UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot, Mrs Nane Annan, NBA Commissioner David Stern and stars of the basketball world. This new partnership pairs the NBA’s global outreach initiative, NBA Cares, with UNICEF. Soundbite (English) Ann M Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director: “Partnering with the NBA global outreach initiative NBA CARES can help us make the world understand that AIDS is not just affecting adults, but it is also having a devastating impact on children throughout the world.” The timing of this AIDS awareness and prevention event is meaningful. Soundbite (English) Peter Piot, UNAIDS Executive Director: “This is happening at a highly symbolic point in the history of AIDS, as next Monday, on the 5th, it will be 25 years ago that AIDS was described for the first time. It was described for the first time.” To support the Campaign against AIDS, the NBA and UNICEF are launching a multi-lingual world-wide public service announcement, or PSA. - Soundclips from the UNICEF-NBA PSA Soundbite (English) David Stern, NBA Commissioner: “I think it is the best use of the power of sports that I can possibly imagine and I’m very proud to be associated with it.” The star athletes emphasized the importance of jumping into the game to make a difference. Soundbite (English) Teresa Weatherspoon, WNBA Legend: ”Playing the game of basketball is a wonderful thing as just a game of entertainment. But when you’re speaking of the game of life, that’s when we step outside of those four lines and you don’t see us as the players that you normally see us as. We want you to see us as human beings who really care.” Soundbite (English) Bill Russell, NBA hall of famer: ”First of all I’m quite flattered and honoured that I was able to participate in this programme because I don’t know anyone that has not lost a friend, acquaintance or a family member to AIDS.” Soundbite (English) Dikembe Mutombo, Houston Rockets Center: ”Are we going to sit down and sit and wait, let this thing go by or are we going to act fast? It’s becoming a problem that we all need to solve very fast. Myself, coming from the continent that’s been touched by this epidemic where we have more than 20 million people that have died already from HIV/AIDS and we have more than 40 million people living with the virus alone.” Expanding treatment for children living with AIDS is a key goal of the NBA-UNICEF partnership. This united effort should prove to be a slam dunk in the fight against AIDS. This is Sabine Dolan reporting for UNICEF.
