Soundbite (Haitian Creole) Ivna Chérie: "My name is Ivna Cherie, I'm eleven years old. I live in Haiti. I like everything about football. It makes me feel better. It helps me not to think about all the bad things that are happening out there in the world." Ivna lives on the edge of the Haitian capital Port-Au-Prince. She's been playing football for her school team since she moved out of city center last year. She had to leave her home there because of a wave of gang warfare, shoot-outs, kidnapping. Soundbite (Haitian Creole) Sophia Pierre, teacher: “She’s happier now. I notice she’s happy even when she’s watching football, not to mention playing.” Ivna's school coach says that in a troubled country like Haiti, the game has an important social lesson. Soundbite (Haitian Creole) Fritz Cariotte, coach: “Football is a collective game so it helps children get along. It teaches them how to forgive each other when they get hurt instead of reacting with violence." After the game, Ivna goes back to her new home. It's a neighborhood with frequent power cuts and no running water. She lives with her aunt Germaine in the house of an uncle who also lives there with his five children. The fighting in Port-Au-Prince closed down the business where Germaine used to work and now they're surviving on money she managed to save. Soundbite (Haitian Creole) Germaine Chérie, aunt: “It's difficult but when you don't have anything you have to resign yourself to living like this." Germaine likes to think football could be the key to different kind of life for Ivna. Soundbite (Haitian Creole) Germaine Chérie, aunt: "Football could give her a chance to travel and see other countries and get access to things she wouldn't otherwise have." But for Ivna herself it’s simpler than that. Soundbite (Haitian Creole) Ivna Chérie: “I feel good when I play football.” This is Malcolm Linton reporting for UNICEF in Port-Au-Prince.
