'어린이에게 친근한 학교'로 활력을 얻는 캄보디아의 교육

2006.11.16
At the crack of dawn, the school day swings into motion in Trapaing Chhouk school, in Kampong Speu, Cambodia. Classes don’t begin for another hour, but students are already streaming in the front gate. They’ve come early for breakfast. A free bowl of rice and lentils. The meal is a partnership between UNICEF and the World Food Program. It’s a key component of the so-called Child Friendly School initiative, which aims to get all children into class by the age of six, and improve the quality of education. Not an easy task in a country where fewer than 50 percent of children finish primary school. 12-year-old Pech Phary expects to be one of those who make it through. She is in fifth grade, one year away from moving on to secondary school. But she says it’s not easy to stay in class. She must balance her studies with her responsibilities in caring for her family’s farm and livestock. Before her school started serving breakfast, it took more effort and incentive to get to school. She says, SOUNDBITE (Khmer) Pech Phary, Student: “Before I was always tired now I have energy and am happy at class.” But breakfast is just the start. The Child Friendly School initiative also promotes building clean and healthy classroom environments, and boosting the training of teachers. It also works to involve the local community in school planning and development. With support from UNICEF, the program has been implemented in more than 500 schools across six Cambodian provinces. UNICEF and its partners hope to more than double that figure by 2010. Beyond simply increasing enrolment numbers, UNICEF hopes improved schools will lay the foundation for a better education, and provide new opportunity for Cambodia’s next generation. This is Steve Nettleton reporting for UNICEF Television. UNITE, for children. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Child-friendly schools give Cambodian children a boost Asset Duration: 02 min 32 secs Shoot City: Kampong Speu Shoot Country: Cambodia Shoot Date: March 17, 20
