레바논의 예방접종 캠페인

2006.11.17
A public garden, a refuge for displaced families, and now the focal point for a nationwide immunization campaign. Even as the conflict in Lebanon rages on, the vital task of protecting children against disease is underway. The minister of health himself has come to lend a hand. With a syringe and some drops of vitamin A, a micronutrient that helps boost children’s resistance against illness. Soundbite (English) Mohammed Jawad Khalifeh, minister of health: “In consideration, the current situation and circumstances from crowded areas, from poor conditions of hygiene, we are afraid of a breakout of any such illnesses and this is why what we are doing now is like booster and re-consolidation of the immunity of our children.” Lebanon has been free of Polio for years, but the unsanitary living conditions many displaced families now find themselves in make vaccinating all children under the age of five a priority. A measles outbreak could be equally disastrous. All children up to the age of 15 must receive the injectable vaccine. Soundbite (English) Roberto Laurenti, UNICEF Lebanon Representative: “All over the country the target is a hundred thousand so far for the first phase, and we are already having in the pipeline another 200,000 doses of measles and 200,000 doses of polio were due to arrive this weekend in order to be able then to cover any other area because the target at the beginning is obviously the children in shelters in schools and other public locations like this one, which is a public garden. But then we should not forget about the children that are now being hosted by other families so that will be the second round.” With an estimated 100,000 displaced children needing immunization, the campaign is an ambitious one. Its success will depend both on a consignment of vaccines that UNICEF is bringing into the country, and on the ability of vaccination teams to do their work under the perilous conditions of war.
