파키스탄 자이카의 이야기

2006.12.27
Under the watchful eyes of her mother, Zakia Bibi is getting ready for school. The shy 10-year-old girl lives in the remote mountainous region of Pakistan’s North West frontier province, in Battagram–one of the country’s least developed district. Her daily routine starts early. SOT: Zakia Bibi, 10-years-old “I wake up at 5 o’clock and say my prayers, I then have breakfast and then I meet the other girls on my way to school.” Zakia’s mother, who never got an education, says her daughter is the first girl in the family to go to school. Here in Battagram, only about six percent of girls over 15 are literate. Zakia’s father lost a leg during last year’s devastating earthquake and can no longer work. Her family’s house was damaged and they still sleep in a tent at night. Every day, Zakia walks to school for almost an hour along rugged terrain. Her former school was badly damaged by the quake and she now goes to a UNICEF-supported tent school. UNICEF has also been supplying backpacks, books and notebooks as well as teachers’ training to support children who lost everything during the earthquake. The girls here say they’re proud to get an education. Many, like Zakia and her class mate Nazia, say they want to become teachers when they grow up. SOT: Nazia Azeem, 10-years-old “For me studies are important because when I can read and write, I can write letters to my brothers and other family members when they’re away. I can also write their phone numbers just in case I have to call them. That’s why it’s important to study in school.” UNICEF has helped re-establish more than 4,000 primary schools that were badly damaged during the quake to make sure that children, especially girls, can continue their education and reclaim their childhood.
