이재민 캠프에 밀려드는 남다르푸르 여성과 어린이

2006.12.28
Weary, wounded and hungry, thousands of women and children have been arriving here at the Ottash Camp in south Darfur, victims of a surge in fighting that has left them homeless and desperate. This young boy was orphaned when his village was attacked by Janjaweed militia. “My father was killed,” he says. “Armed men beat us, they came with arms and horses and beat us. So we ran away while our parents died.” This woman shows the burns she received when the Janjaweed torched her village. Many children who survived the attack died later of thirst and hunger. CLIP: NARINDER SHARMA, UNICEF PROGRAMME OFFICER - “Some of them had been hiding in bushes, because the trouble started in the first week of September, and they have been hiding in the bushes during that time and then they managed to come to Ottash camp in a very bad situation when they arrived here.” An estimated 11 thousand, mainly women and children, arrived at Ottash Camp in October alone. UNICEF set up dozens of extra water points, built latrines and worked with partners to provide emergency food and treatment to malnourished children. CLIP: MARIE NZUNGIZE, UNICEF NUTRITION OFFICER – “Among these maybe 30 children here there are 4 that look like they could be severely malnourished.” UNICEF is also helping children recover from the mental trauma they’ve suffered. Child-friendly spaces, education and recreation are being provided to give them some sense of normalcy amid the chaos of conflict.
