마을의 보건, 위생 개선에 노력하는 한 빈민촌의 10대 소녀

2006.12.28
Life is different now in Rupnagar. Thanks to 17 year old Doly Akter and her friends of the adolescent girls’ club, this once filthy and disease-ridden slum on the outskirts of Dhaka in Bangladesh is clean and sanitary. Doly and her friends instruct their neighbours in good hygiene and monitor their habits. SOUNDBITE (BANGLA) Doly Akter, 17: “We observe which family drinks safe water and which does not, and which family uses hygienic latrines. Also we monitor which family members cut their nails and if there have been any cases of diarrhea in children under five recently.” Doly’s work does not stop at health and hygiene, her group also deals with wider social issues like early marriage and school drop-outs. SOUNDBITE (BANGLA) Doly Akter, 17: “While trying to improve these small things like sanitation and safe drinking water, we are addressing and solving the bigger social problems. It helps us improve the environment and quality of our life.” Halima’s parents had arranged for her to be married at 14. Doly’s outreach visits helped change their minds. Early marriages are now rare in Doly’s neighbourhood, unlike elsewhere in Bangladesh where two-thirds of girls are married before they turn 18. SOUNDBITE (BANGLA) Doly Akter, 17: “We have to develop the mentality amongst adolescents that they can do something. Then, we will be able to unite together. If we can bring together, say 10 or 12 of us, we’ll be strong.” As Doly inspires others around her to improve their lives, the benefits which are now appreciated by her neighbours and their families will, Doly hopes, reach beyond her slum and touch a wider society, improving life for hundreds more.
