* Paris conference makes historic commitment to liberate children from war You’re watching UNICEF Television French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, UN Special Representative Radhika Coomaraswamy and, in the middle, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Rima Salah concluding the Free Children from War conference in Paris today. The high-level two-day meeting attended by representatives from 58 countries concluded with an historic agreement. Soundbite: Philippe Douste-Blazy, French Foreign Affairs Minister 02 00 15 “We commit ourselves to spare no effort to end the unlawful recruitment and use of children by armed forces or groups in all regions of the world.” The Paris Commitment also lays out detailed guidelines for providing assistance to those children already involved in hostilities. Soundbite: Rima Salah, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director: “58 countries, 70 intergovernmental organizations and 30 non-governmental organizations – experts and grassroots actors – we are all concerned. Concerned by the shame of seeing children used for war. Concerned about the future of these children who are too often forgotten. These boys and girls considered by their recruiters to be expendable.” Earlier Martin Bell, UNICEF UK Ambassador for Humanitarian Emergencies, chaired a discussion on strategies to prevent the recruitment of child soldiers. At a reception on Monday night, Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, was presented with a petition of more than 235,000 signatures calling for the liberation of child soldiers. Soundbite: Radhika Coomaraswamy, UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict: “This petition is very symbolic because it is not only government that is making a pledge but at the grass roots the people in France feel very strongly about this issue” In Paris, this is Dan Thomas reporting for UNICEF Television.
