* State of the World’s Children 2008 – services for the disabled in Argentina
* 02 min 28 secs

Driving through Eldorado’s jungle, community health workers are on their way to the home of 5 year old Lorenzo.

Located in the north eastern corner of Argentina, the area is largely remote. It takes hours to drive to Lorenzo’s house.

This is Lorenzo. He has serious speech and movement impairments. He lives here with his parents and three siblings.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Angela, community health worker: “Lorenzo is five years old, with cerebral palsy. His brother is deaf mute, and on top of all that their mother also has disabilities. The first thing they always ask me every time I come to their house is bread and meat.”

Lorenzo is then taken to the El Dorado community centre, where children like him can receive proper treatment designed for their special needs.

With UNICEF’s support, the centre not only provides vital services for disabled children, but special assistance for their families.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Angela, community health worker: “I got this family to donate a wheelchair for Lorenzo, the 5 year old boy. This way his mother can take him to the medical centre where we have a project called “To Be Born.” Children get consultation there at least once a month.”
With persistent efforts of the health workers and support of his parents, Lorenzo is making great progress and is now attending school.

After hours of excising and rehabilitation, all children are head back home with the transportation provided by the centre.

Initiatives are also taken to identify more boys and girls with disabilities, so that they can start the treatment early, and have a better chance for a quality life in the future.

This is Kun Li reporting for Unicef Television. Unite for Children.
