* 시간: 02 min 21 secs

You’re watching UNICEF television …
Baby Mohammed is only a few hours old but his mother is HIV positive and so he’s about to begin a course of prophylactic drugs.

Prevention of mother to child transmission is one of the most important aspects of the Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign which launched in 2005. And the second stocktaking report says enormous progress has been made.

Whether it’s this community-based programme in Djibouti which reaches the majority of the country’s pregnant women …. Or this clinic in Lesotho, where women and children are receiving sophisticated HIV AIDS prevention and pediatric treatment … UNICEF and its partners are making sure that children are no longer the invisible face of HIV AIDS.

SOT Jimmy Kolker UNICEF Chief of HIV and AIDS
“There is attention to the issue. It’s in 100 countries national plans and there’s a sense that this is something that can be scaled up on a nationwide basis even to hard to reach groups, even in the poorest countries.”

While there has been progress is tackling HIV AIDS, millions of have yet to be reached.

Projects like the UNICEF-supported the Bashy Bus in Jamaica … in which young people have come up with their own ways to change risky behaviour … are showing that the message can get across, especially to the young.

SOT Jimmy Kolker UNICEF Chief HIV and AIDS
“The problem is that so many people, especially young people are continuing to get infected and the behaviour change messages are being honed and focused on vulnerable groups but the progress there hasn’t been as encouraging as it should be. There’s still hundreds of thousands of new infections every year.”

The report says that community support is one of the best way to ensure successful HIV AIDS prevention. UNICEF and its partners are making sure that all anti AIDS programme do not exist in a vacuum, but strengthen the health, education and social welfare systems of the countries in which they operate.

This is CN reporting for UNICEF television. Unite for Children.
