* UNICEF: Reconstructing lives for earthquake
* 시간: 02 min 08 secs

For the first time since the May earthquake flattened their village, these children are laughing and playing.

Guojiashan, in southern Gansu province, was spared the death toll that struck other communities in Sichuan and neighboring provinces.
But the impact of the quake here, less than 300 kilometers from the epicenter, was no less devastating, leaving schools and homes destroyed, and an already poor farming economy in ruins.

Guo Qingyi, the principal of the village primary school is proud that none of his students were injured. But the 40-year-old school building was damaged.

“We just hope we can have a school where the students can study in a safe environment. To have normal windows and doors like other schools. Not in a dangerous place like this.”

Guo worries about reports that wolves are stalking the village. And with hundreds of aftershocks each day, he fears landslides could destroy what’s left of the village.

“The biggest problem is we really don’t know when this earthquake will end. It’s starting to affect the children’s education.”

Help is reaching more and more schools in towns and villages in southern Gansu, such as Yangji primary school in Zaojiao.

UNICEF and the All China Women’s Federation have distributed clothing and other personal items to thousands of students.

UNICEF is providing tents and medical supplies, as well as psychological and support to children and teachers.

But in many villages, the need remains great. Nearly 500 students at this primary and junior high school in Guochan village must study outside under the trees. Their school has been declared unsafe, and it is too hot inside the tents that have been provided.
