Eric and Mary are raising 10 children. As well as four of their own, they care for six orphans.
They live in Njinicom, in Cameroon’s North West province … where a small garden and some livestock provide income for the family.
Both Eric and Mary are HIV positive. And for both the diagnosis was a very difficult time in their lives.

SOT ERIC -Living with HIV
“I felt sad. I even take a very long time before I came back to my normal self.”

SOT MARY - Living with HIV
“Very, very sad. I almost committed suicide.”

But despair has turned to optimism for the couple who have become volunteers for Project Hope ... a successful community-based HIV prevention and support programme.

Project Hope’s work starts in the marketplace … where young people talk to others about how to avoid HIV infection.

SOT Eric Mercier
Regional AIDS advisor
It’s something that’s been developed throughout Cameroon and it’s a very simple way of engaging young peple and for them to make changes about risky behaviour and ways to address risky situations.
The outreach is backed by health centres with HIV screening and pediatric care, and a programme to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child.

Natsot Eric and Mary in the garden …
Eric and Mary’s lives are a vibrant testimony to the optimism that Project Hope has brought to Njinicom. Mary has given birth to three children and Eric works as a counsellor ... teaching others what Project Hope has taught him ....
that a fulfilling and healthy life with HIV is possible, and not a source of shame.
”People should be ready to talk more because if you know about yourself and can talk about yourself you will not be ashamed of anything.”
