* UNICEF: continued relief work for Myanmar's cyclone victims
* 시간: 02 min 22 secs

With relief efforts under way, and prevention measures in force, the situation in Myanmar is looking better with each passing day. However, UNICEF will continue relief works until the lives of cyclone-affected families are fully restored.

Continued relief efforts are taking the form of water purification and sanitation; returning children to school; and support for families through the construction of child-friendly spaces.

UNICEF director of emergencies, Louis Georges Arsenault recently visited Myanmar to take stock of the situation. He travelled to Bogalay in the Irrawaddy division, one of the worst-hit areas.

SOUNDBITE, Louis Georges-Arsenault, UNICEF Director of Emergencies:
“Some children as you well know have seen their whole village being killed, wiped out, disappearing by the tidal wave or the cyclone. Quite traumatic so being able to bring back school very quickly, even though it’s in temporary shelters, in tents or plastic sheeting pulled together, it really did make a difference for these kids.”

Cyclone Nargis destroyed or damaged over 4,000 schools and more than 600 health facilities, contaminated 4,000 drinking water wells and left behind hundreds of young children separated from their parents and close relatives.

Hygiene and sanitation are of particular concern in Labutta camp.

SOUNDBITE (Burmese) U (Mr) Aung Myat Soe, Assistant Engineer at the Health Ministry’s Department of Environment Sanitation:
“We not only provide personal and environmental hygiene facilities but also promote better hygienic practices and explain what they should do through health education talks.”

All this, and more… in an effort to BUILD BACK BETTER…. For the people and the children of Myanmar.
