A little inconvenience… for a long-term, potentially life-saving process.

A UNICEF-supported campaign in Tanzania provided services that are the most effective public health interventions available – measles vaccination, vitamin A supplementation, deworming, polio vaccination and distribution of long lasting insecticide treated nets.

SOT Dr. Abdulai Tinorgah, UNICEF, Chief, Young Child Survival and Development Programme:
This integrated measles campaign in Tanzania is an important event for the health of children in Tanzania. As you know, over the past 5-10 years, Tanzania has made significant progress in reducing child mortality and is generally on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goals for children.

Through measles vaccination campaigns such as this one, global measles mortality decreased by 68 per cent between 2000 and 2006. This and other measures such as the delivery of bednets are reducing child mortality in Tanzania.

SOT Dr. Abdulai Tinorgah, UNICEF, Chief, Young Child Survival and Development Programme:
In this campaign also, all children under 5, in Tanga region will receive a long lasting insecticide treated net, along with the other interventions. But that’s not all. Following, in the coming months of this campaign, there is going to be a national net distribution. And over 7 million nets will be distributed in Tanzania, funded by partners like The World Bank, The Global Fund, the U.S. President’s malaria initiative, and UNICEF.

All this… well worth a little inconvenience… and a few tears to save many little lives.
