During years of civil conflict in northern Uganda, schools were closed, entire communities moved to safety in displacement camps.

Now, with a fragile peace returning to the Lira District, families are going back to their homes, and schools are re-opening.

But many of these children have been traumatized by the conflict, some of them abducted by insurgents and forced to fight, and returning to a normal childhood might seem impossible.

Soundbite (English) Edwin Odur-luru, war child:
“These kids have had their lives torn apart, and the kind of help they need at the moment is psycho-social support to help them re-integrate into the community and into their family lives.”

Fourteen year-old Samuel Opido spent four years in a displacement camp with 10 of his brothers and sisters.

He says many bad things happened in the camps -- fires, diseases, many people dying, and things he can’t even talk about.

But now, for Samuel and thousands of other students in this district, organized games and sport competitions are helping to transform their schools into effective centers for rehabilitating their communities, encouraging non-violent ways to resolve disputes, and forging strong bonds between parents and schools.

Soundbite (English) Alex Ochien, parent:
“The sport competitions help the child to forget about the past, and help all of us in the community to focus on the present and the future.”

In this project supported by UNICEF, sport competitions and game activities are promoted among 50 schools here, encouraging children to go back to classes and rebuild their lives.

Samuel says sport and games have brought him together with new friends, and opened his mind to think about positive things, stay out of trouble, and do well in school.

Children and their parents, determined to leave their unhappy past behind them, assisted by the simple pleasures of games and sports.
