More than eight million people live in New York City, and every one of them has access to fresh, running water. But a billion people around the world don't enjoy that privilege.

On World Water Day New Yorkers gathered to draw attention to how many children have to collect and carry their
own water, often for long distances.

SOT Arhea Marshall Tap Project Youth leader:
"It's water. It's a basic necessity of life. It's what we need to survive and I feel that if we've all got tot share the earth, we need to share our water as well. One percent of the earth's water, just one percent out of 70 percent of the earth made out of water is good for clean drinking water."

The Tap Project Walk kicked off World Water Week, which aims to get safe drinking water to every child.

Five thousand children die every day from unsafe water. It's the second largest killer of children under the age of five.

SOT Arhea Marshall Tap Project Youth Spokesperson:
"Anyone, no matter how young, not matter how old, can do something to help this cause. It isn't something like a medical cause that you need a PhD to help with. It's something that you can help with anywhere any situation, any part of the world."

By stepping out in support of children, these young people began what organizers hope will be a long journey towards committing themselves to the cause of fresh water for everybody—no matter where they live.
