* UNICEF promotes WASH in schools during World Water Week
* 시간: 02 min 22 secs

The Convention on the Rights of the Child calls access to clean water and sanitation a right of all children. It also enshrines a child's right to education. But all too often … these two fundamental rights don't meet in the schoolroom.

SOUNDBITE: Murat Sahin (English), UNICEF WASH in schools advisor: "Globally, more than 50 percent of schools, they don't have access to water supply. And 2/3 are lacking access to sanitation facilities.

Around the world, UNICEF is helping to change that. By treating water and sanitation as a prerequisite for universal education.

WASH facilities in schools have a profound impact on school attendance and retention, particularly for girls who require more privacy and who are more likely to be removed from school if fetching water is a family chore.

The success of WASH in schools program has made it a leading priority for national partners.

SOUNDBITE: Murat Sahin (English), UNICEF WASH in schools advisor: "In 2002 it was 43 countries who had WASH in school activities. In 2008 we came to 88 countries"

From Indonesia to Senegal and from Afghanistan to Ghana … Unicef is a lead agent in WASH interventions.

This school in Georgia, damaged during a war last summer, has been refurbished with a new water and sanitation system.

UNICEF is also working in Sichuan China to make sure that such facilities are included in schools being rebuilt after a devastating earthquake.

Beyond the physical facility, the school also has a role to play in educating children about the health risks that come with poor hygiene or unsafe water. School children then become natural outreach workers.

SOUNDBITE: Murat Sahin (English), UNICEF WASH in schools advisor: "We shouldn't think of WASH in schools as inside only. There is an outreach potential from schools to the community."

On World Water Week Unicef calls on global leaders to dedicate more resources to WASH in schools. To enhance the role of the school and the role of the washroom … by bringing them together as often as possible.
