Students at Mutasa Primary School in Harare are among the many who've suffered tremendous hardship during the country's economic and political upheaval.

Sanitary facilities are poor and in some classes students sit on the floor because there are not enough desks to go around.

Across Zimbabwe there are thousands of schools like this one … where textbooks have become a luxury and up to ten students sharing one book.
And one in five schools have no books at all for some subjects.

The impact on dropout rates has been staggering. Almost fifty per cent of primary school students do not go on to secondary school.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Peter Salama, UNICEF Representative in Zimbabwe: "Last year was a lost academic year for most children. Although enrolment rates have risen again this year, there are many signs that a quality education is eluding most children."

UNICEF and its partners have launched a 70 million dollar campaign that aims within one year to put books in the hands of all students in all of the country's 5,300 primary schools.

The programme, which is supported by European and Australasian countries will also pay the school fees of children who are orphaned or vulnerable.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Peter Salama, UNICEF Representative in Zimbabwe: "In the past two months, since this plan has been fully formulated it has been extremely gratifying to see how the partners have rallied around."

Zimbabwe's education system was once one of the best in the region. With this ambitious programme, UNICEF and its partners are hoping that the country can once again take its place setting an example of quality education for all its children.
