These two Samoan nurses are not letting horrendous dirt path stand in the way of their mission. They are going to vaccinate children that need it the most.

To prevent an increase of communicable diseases in the disaster-hit community, UNICEF and the World Health Organization, are giving full support to the Samoan Government, to start immunization campaign.

In Apia, the capital city of Samoa, health professionals gathered for a last refresher training.

To get the staff up to speed, a briefing on measles and the importance of vitamin took place.

SOUNDBITE (English) Philip Mann, UNICEF Health & Nutrition Specialist:
"Vitamin A is quite an important micronutrients which assist in the child's body combating infectious diseases. It's very helpful to combat measles, but it's also very helpul for diorreah diseases, and in general it boots the immunological response, or the strenght of the child to fight infections"

The aftermath of a disaster can leave irreversible damages in a community.

But tackling effectively and quickly children's health issues before outbreak take their toll, is key to prevent needless deaths.
